because it will need 17 million in sales in the next 5 1/2 months!!

or 51% of what it has sold so far in its life in less than 1/2 a year...... thats why.

So what? Last year the Wii sold 11m in the same period.

VGChartz Hardware data for the period 06th Oct 2007 to 29th Mar 2008:

Console Wii
Total
11,197,073

It's still unknown how great the demand for the Wii is in America, 17m in worldwide sales during the next six months seem to be possible, because the Wii's sales have increased greatly year over year (with the exception of Japan).

What? OP says Jan 09. Where the hell did March 29th come from.

From Nintendo's target for the current fiscal year which would bring the Wii to a total of 51m shipped to retail. I brought that up because several people including the OP are predicting low Wii numbers (40-41m) by the end of January, but 46-47m would be a more reasonable prediction.

Hmm. You may have a point. My prediction may be low for the wii. Then Crunch may hurt sales slightly. But I doubt it. If the child wanted a PS3 then the wii will probably be chosen more of the 360 more often. Unless say in UK they really wanted Fifa 09 in which case 360 would be chosen. But I think you may be on to something here.
