We all have heard the argument that the Wii needs stronger third party showings.  Many Wii apologists have admitted this is be true but say that their is a very substantial library growing.  Stellar efforts like Okami, No More Heroes, Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles, Zack and Wiki, and Boom Blox have all come to the system.  This is their argument.  I would like to focus on one of these efforts; Boom Blox.

After reading extremely positive reviews and hearing about the deep and involving gameplay I was very excited.  While taking off the shrink wrap from the exterior my heart skipped a beat.  After first inserting the disc and the blue light coming on I waited with bated breath for what was about to come next.

That moment...

That moment when two mooing cow blocks flew across my screen.  When this happened I was terrified but didn't know why.

Back to that later.  On to the game...

Upon first impressions the game comes across as being very entertaining.  The editorial shows you several ways to blow up buildings made out of blocks.  You can throw baseballs at them, shoot them down with guns, and grab pieces of the building and throw them aside.

Did I mention that the game is ugly as sin?  As a Wii owner that doesn't care about graphics this doesn't matter to me in the least though.  I digress...

Did I mention that the controls are imprecise?  Many of the levels are timed and need accurate controls for you to complete them.  This is difficult when you can grab the correct piece only about one third of the time.  The shooting is also off.  Not the pointing ; but the actual shooting has a delay.  Sounds like fun.  Doesn't it?

Did I mention the most important thing?  The game is not fun.  Blowing up buildings with bombs and shooting cows with lasers should be a blast but isn't.

Did I mention that their are sheep blocks in this game?  Count them and see what happens.

I looked back to that moment...

That moment when I realized that this might not be a good game.

The main problem with Boom Blox is their is a great idea for a game there but the execution is awful.  It's like trying to find a golden kernel of corn in a turd.  I'm thinking that the people that reviewed this game had a few beers and played multiplayer for five minutes.  I'm not trying to say that Boom Blox is a bad game, but after playing it for an hour I was looking forward to the possibility of a Far Cry : Vengeance sequel.
