ITS UP!

9/10

Bits from the review:

Amidst all this big talk though, one of the game's big ideas got lost in the chatter: an idea that will probably mean more to more people than any of the Game 3.0 posturing and theorising, or the daringly ambitious online features, or the astonishing freedom of the creative tools. LittleBigPlanet sets out to resurrect the simple fun of a game you control with left, right and jump. It sets out to make the side-scrolling platform game relevant and exciting again. And it succeeds.

The camera scales competently for four players on a single machine, and it's played this way that LittleBigPlanet is at its absolute best: an irresistible, riotous, social and totally accessible entertainment.

LittleBigPlanet is a great platform game. It's not a perfect one. It doesn't need to be, though, because its creative tools turn it into something else entirely, a unique, hilarious, endless entertainment. Even - and this is an absolutely crucial point - if you never use them.

AAAAAAAAAND FINALLY THEIR CONCLUSION!

But mostly, we're just happy to see a flagship game for a modern system that's about running from left to right and jumping over things. New ideas are great, great old ideas are better, and LittleBigPlanet has both: it's the future and the past of videogames, rolled into one.

LittleBigPlanet review on Sunday

LittleBigPlanet has been winning headlines with consummate ease ever since its announcement at GDC last year, so it's my pleasure to tell you that one of the first reviews of the finished game will be posted on Eurogamer at midnight on Sunday.

Just so there's no doubt about that, I'm going to hit the button at 11.59pm. You can all read it a minute later. The game's obviously destroyed our web-servers once, with the beta key giveaway, but hopefully they will hold in two days' time now that we've upgraded them a bit.

LittleBigPlanet is, of course, Media Molecule's fascinating new 2D platform game where every level is something that the player could then go off and recreate in its entirety using the creation tools included.

The developer confirmed this week that all of your creations from the beta will be online for use with the full game, and of course the winning level in our ongoing LittleBigPlanet level design competition will be as well. Plus you'll be able to play it at the Eurogamer Expo.

For more on the game - as if you can take any more - check out today's Eurogamer TV Special on Media Molecule, where Johnny and James visit the studio and talk to the people behind it.

Then join us again at bedtime Sunday to find out whether it lives up to the massive, massive hype.
