Oh, I know all about it, and it's nice to see a developer trying their best with a Wii game. But the question remains valid: what if a person just doesn't like the genre? I mean, we can't support games just for the sake of supporting games, especially if that means a game we like goes unpurchased...

It's people like you who ruin the industry.
"I would rather buy Mario Kart Wii than No More Heroes".
You know what we call that kind of people? CC - Casual Crap.
I agree with you though. I'm not very interested in the Conduit atm, as it doesn't seem like anything special (dang, I've done this before, I'm likely to get grouped. This should save me from that though), and I might pick it up if it gets some good word of mouth.
The problem is simply that I own Team Fortress 2 on PC.
So for offline multiplayer, I'd probably prefer MKWii or Brawl.
Sinlgeplayer some other game (not tCs strongest suit)
Online TF2 or MKWii.
And by the time I'm tired of those games, the Conduit is no longer the best of its kind on the Wii.
