Second place in this console generation is sweet because this is the first gen that have 3 curious things:

1. 1st place is supported more by strong 1st and 2nd party
2. 2nd and 3rd place are getting most of the big 3rd party
3. 1st place exploits a complete different thing than the other two

If you look at 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th gens, all of them exploited traditional kind of gaming and similar graphics, and they fought with that in mind, now one console is exploiting new forms of gaming (Wii) and the other two are exploiting HD graphics and traditional gaming (PS3, 360)...

Don't get me wrong, they would kill for the Wii position now, but this 2nd place is a 1st place in a different fight...

Oddly enough, I don't agree with you on that one.

If SONY had to have sold the same as the Wii (let alone selling better) at around 6.84 million units, they would have to absorb an extra 4.45 million times the loss they are currently getting per console.

The 2nd hand software market is huge in Japan, so it would be ages before they could recoup the damage.

I think SONY is more than happy selling a stable ~8000 - ~10000 units a week.

It's interesting, Sony compromised themselves to golds when the PS3 launched, golds that would lead to more hardware loss, one would think they had a plan for it, and if i recall correctly, it had to do with software, the thing is, the Cell at first was a real pain in the ass for developers and the console was highly priced for the public, i remember TGS2006 where everyone wanted to try the Wii, and the PS3 was put apart with only one game (besides the known franchises) that got J's to wonder (White Knight Story)... If they had a plan to lose in hardware and gain in software, it was not working because only one exclusive game was at PS3 side for a long period of time, and that game is not appealing to the mayority of Japan (Resistance:FOM)...

These days are over now, the developers are getting used to the PS3 architecture (except some lazy multiplatformers), the hardware is selling well,  and now they're getting more and more software, enough to balance the hardware losses, and the more consoles they sell, the more software they sell too, it doesn't matter the 2nd hand software, look at PS3 software sales in 2007 vs hardware the same year

Software: 2,951,400

Hardware: 1,206,300

And PS2 Software in 2007 was still a machine:

Software: 13,262,900

Hardware: 816,400

And PSP with all the piracy in 2007 still managed this:

Software: 6,750,200

Hardware: 3,022,700

And 2008 is even better for PSP and PS3, and PS2 software is still selling like hotcakes (Super Robot Wars Z anyone?)

The problem with the PS3 is not 2nd-hand software, it's the lack of appealing software to J's, but that's hopefully solved, so unless they have production problems, they should have no trouble now selling more than 10,000 units a week, especially with more appealing titles on the way...
