The difference between a casual gamer and a hardcore gamer can be found in the hands of a clock. The casual player has less time to play games, or has less desire to play games. A hardcore player might spend over twenty hours a week playing games. While the casual player might spend less then six hours in the same week. That is the only real difference between the groups. Casual was a term used long before the Wii hit the market.
Thanks to the Wii controls however the console is far more friendly to casual players. The controls are simple and intuitive improving the gaming experience for players who do not have the extra time to learn complex controls. The price is also friendly to casual players who feel less compelled to spend more for something they will use far less then their hardcore counterparts.
Complexity and design are not relegated to a particular system. For instance the GTA series is a casual game series. The game is open ended and has a sandbox layout. Hardcore players will probably work their way through the story mode. While casual players might play through a few missions, and then spend countless hours just wandering around killing pedestrians. The controls, difficulty, and the abundance of cheat codes make the game rather simplistic.
Simply being on the Wii console does not make a game casual in nature. Being on the console makes the game more accessible to the casual player however. When you use the term casual in reference to the Wii. Use it in reference to the controls that is the casual part. They are easy on the casual player, but are fine tuned enough for the hardcore player.
There is a casual market, and thanks to the Wii controls they can bring more casual players to their console. However casual players are not stupid or lazy players. They are players with less time on their hands. They are the kind of people that want to jump into a game for a hour and be able to leave and do something else. Some games do not let players do that. That is a design philosophy, and is often overdone by some developers.
I would gather by the design of Dewy that it is a casual friendly game. Notice in the demo the levels are small. The game time is minimal, and the design is straight forward. However that does not mean the game will not appeal to hardcore players. I suppose we will have to see the reviews.
