I thought the PS2 had sold just over 120 m. Where did the 140 m figure originate from?
July 2008:
"Sony told those attending the video game industry’s E3 convention last week that sales of its original PlayStation, launched in 1994, had reached 102m units and the PlayStation 2 console had now passed 140m worldwide in its ninth year on sale."

The PS2 is selling well in poorer countries nowadays. It was clear since day one Sony would not be able to afford selling the PS3 at PS2/Wii figures early on. But the console performs well at a higher entry pricing compared to the PS1 and 360.
Sony expects to sell 10 million PS3 consoles this year, with the price dropping the coming years and high profile software and important features being added, sales will likely gradually grow in the upcoming years. The goal is to sell 150 million PS3s within a 10 year lifecycle.
