The PS3 launch seems to have bombed in Australia.... Sony said they had 20,000 pre-orders, but most stores were virtually deserted when they opened at midnight. The guy who bought the first PS3 in the country said he was shocked to be first in line when he only turned up after 9pm...

The SMH is one of the most reputable news sources in the country
but you have 20k units which are already being preordered.

An estimated 50k units are available at AU launch.

Why would you line up when you can easily get one from store the next morning.
a) Because you don't know how many have actually been "preordered". The Wii had more available at launch, and none available the next day.
b) Because "die-hard" PS3 fans *should* want to pick theirs up at launch.
I was at the Wii launch at Highpoint (much smaller than the main Wii launch in Melbourne), and we had 40-50 people there - maybe more. It was limited by the number of preorders the store was allowed to take/cut-off date.
No matter what spin Sony puts on this:
LESS SALES = BAD
MORE SALES = GOOD
I don't think anyone can argue with that ;)
