In all fairness, how is this any worse than Sony cutting the price of the 60gb then releasing a new SKu at the former price essentially duplicating the original SKU scenario for when the console was launched except now one of them doesn't have reverse compatibility.
If I had to give MS any credit, I would suspect this price cut being little more than a maneuver to deflate any speculation that they were planning a larger price cut after Halo3's launch. This would be advantageous as if Sony felt MS might drop a bombshell just before Christmas they themselves might push for another price cut to one up the box. This way, MS gives the illusion they're only willing to put one foot forward (not serious enough to force the competition to consider another price cut but just enough to convince them this is all MS is willing to do) when in fact they could be easily poised to make a greater price cut before the holidays not giving the fooled competition enough time to counter. But this may be giving them too much credit.
Yeah, not that great a deal though. Surprised there isn't much MS love here though. Also, while the 360 was known for its problems from the start, I would wait until the PS3 has been out as long as the 360 had been before the "red ring of death" epidemic before declairing a victory for console quality.
