There's no reason why they can't use HD-DVD for the games (assuming they can even dig up anyone to produce them, which may or may not be feasible, I have no idea), but if they want people to be able to watch their Blu-ray movies on the system it's obviously going to have to be Blu-ray capable. This may not be considered an essential function but it is a selling point for some people.
