Ahhhh! That's how you do the tricks with the GC controller. I only have 3 Wiimotes + Nunchucks so whenever there's 4 person playing at home the unlucky 4th player had to use to GC controller and no tricks because we couldn't figure out how to do them.

Did your version of the game come without instructions?

4 player Mario Kart usually goes with lots of alcohol so the instruction booklet seems to be missing lots of information when it happens.
