They were not 'ripped off'. Konami holds most of the patents for these games, so they are really the originators of this genre. Both Activision and EA are paying Konami to use these patents. It's no more a ripoff than all the FPS games are ripping off Wolfenstein or Doom. As far as RB blowing out the GH franchise, you do realize GH3 was the best selling game in the past year? And that's not even including the Aerosmith version and all the DLC and merchandising.

Rock band obviously didn't sell more but it did blow GH3 quality wise.
I've played the konami games and yeah...they may hold the pattent the same way atari held the pattent for use of type of cartriges for a console. Nintendo and sega had to pay Atari to do the same but what they produced was 10 times better.
Any way you look at it Guitar Hero 3 is like Terminator 3 in a sense that James Cameron...original visionery and creator is nowhere to be found.
And if Rockband did not come out last year and change the way music games are played...we'd be playing "Guitar Hero 4:we're completely stale and out of ideas" game. All of these sub-games like Aerosmith and Rock the 80s proves that Activision is all about milking that license.
