Kirby could be considered an entry game. It is the game that 6-year-olds play. This is not a knock on the games because they are also sometimes very hard and complex. But that is how some reviewers see them -- and hence they get (undeservedly) low scores.
Kirby is Nintendo's handheld platforming mascot, just like Mario is on consoles. (Both have jumped over to the other's realm but have had the most success in their native format).
And there are dedicated Kirby fans. Just remember that NPD sales would be US only. So worldwide, I am sure several titles went seven-digits.
