McCain was afraid of what Obama would do if they just had a Town Hall sort of deal with Obama answering questions in front of millions of people. Obama did have a point, the presidential election process has been the same through D-Day, depressions and wars and the situation today is nowhere near as dire as back then. McCain's "no campaign unil the economy is fine" was a decent gamble, but Obama's retaliation was perfect.
