Let's face it... MS can't let Apple die because that's MS's R&D department. 
OT: I've owned and programmed Macs and PCs for years, and while they both have their strengths and weaknesses, I prefer to own Macs for home. I'm a Unix-head (since 1980) and I like the fact that the current Mac OS (not that earlier crap) is based on Unix. Also, I tend to have a lot less problems with the peripherals working without conflict and the Mac UI is more intuitive (this is why Windows keeps looking more and more like the Mac UI over time).
In the end, it's a personal preference. If I was into PC gaming, wanted to roll my own PC, or wanted to run with the herd I would own a Windows PC. But for now, the Mac meets my needs (I tend to use it for media work).
