The original poster qualified their statement to mean a epic failure with reviewers. That said any game that comes in on the shovel would qualify, and that list is far too long, and a utter waste of time to collate. Beyond that all the highly anticipated games have already received massive praise from reviewers. They are not apt to build a straw house.
I think the better question would be which highly reviewed title with ample hype will fail to sell a respectable number of games. To me the obvious answer is Mirrors Edge. The hype is strong with this one, but Electronic Arts failed to give it a good run up. So it will not be an ingrained need with gamers when they have so much more to choose from.
The game will receive high praise from reviewers. However even so the bleached visual effects, the focus on first person melee, and the mere fact that the game is unconventional will probably damage the sales greatly. I think Electronic Arts has probably killed off a possibly stellar game with bad planning.
This game should have been front and center six months ago. To give players more time to get excited. This game should also have been sold outside of the holiday season. Bottom line the game looks bland in comparison to the games around it. Finally this game is too radical in the realm of comfortable genre stereotypes. After all it is hard to sell someone on something new when the best of the old is on display.
