I think you're right, this could have damaged it even more: everybody could forgive more flaws in the first units produced, particularly if the warranty is good and no harm is done to users and their wallets. But tweaking the project several times, promising every time the problem is solved once and for all, and still the problem was there until now, with almost 20 million vulnerable units produced, this tainted XB360's reputation more than the initial problem. And right now, there's still a chance that resellers still have some faulty units to get rid of, this damages XB sales a little bit more too.
