Fourth Generation - 16 bit era

Since when have we ever referred to generations by power? I'll answer that for you, never. Why is 32 and 64 bit in the same gen? So PS1 had a next gen storage device so that makes it next gen? What about Neo-Geo or 3DO?
Gen is nothing a but a simple classification and doesn't really have any meaning. The genesis competed against the NES and SNES. How about we just talk about things how they are instead of using stupid classifications to make a fanboy point?

We (or more accurately video game developers, analysists, etc.) have always refered to generations by power.

No they haven't, developers/analysts consider wii as this gen, there may be a couple that still say wii isn't this gen but they are by far in the minority.
