Lets say you are an adult/parent -> you will buy the 360 and some software instead of just a ps3,and then move to other gifts. Very simple and easy.

Actually, kids get what they ask for. So if they "demand" a PS3, parents will oblige.

They won't go "I got you something similar" and disappoint their kid.

Not true. The price of the PS3 puts alot off. Last year my nephew 10 wanted a PS3 for christmas and ended up with a wii because of cost. There are many families who cant afford 400 Euros. So they will get another option and M$ have fallen right in that option.

Well, that 's not how things are around here.  I have the opportunity to work a lot of children and they all admitted that they nag the ears off their parents all year long to make sure they get what they want (and probably giving their parents the chance to save up the money :p).  The parents know what the kids want, so either it's something completely different (because they know the specific choice of the kid, and don't want to go for "something similar" or they cough it up anyway).

I'll give you a scenario. The kid nags his mum for a PS3 and he really wants Fifa 09 (europe) or Madden 09, Nba 09 (america) for christmas. Parents go to the shop see the price of the 360 (and by the sounds of things adverts from M$ this year will be in abundance) and realise that the 360 with fifa 09 is less than £200. Not saying everyone will do that, but M$ have put themselves in the position that those who can be swayed most likely will.
