Originally, trolling was a USENET term for making intentionally inappropriate, stupid, or offensive posts to a group in order to provoke a reaction from the group.

For example, someone might troll a technical group by asking an extremely stupid question, thus resulting in comedic gold when some poor fool interprets it as a legitimate question.

More destructive forms of trolling are posting graphic sexual or violent material or flooding a group with nonsense text.

I think that a lot of what gets called trolling isn't really trolling under the traditional definition. The traditional definition requires that someone be trying to deliberately interfere with a discussion for their own satisfaction. Around here, I think we have a bunch of people who are unintentionally inappropriate, stupid, or offensive.
