I am currently enrolled in section 46597 at my university for Astophysics II for the Fall 2007 semester. I have read both The Elegant Universe and The Fabric of the Cosmos, both of which were written by a Professor who teaches at my school.
Assuming you have some education on the topic (I assume you do, as you are able to distinguish between M and String theories), I'm sure you're aware of the strong relation and parallelism between M and String theory. If you'd like to discuss the similarities and disparities between the two, I'd be happy to.
Since the topic has been breached, only Bosonic string theory has twenty six dimensions. Super String and M both have eleven.
