Yes.... but there is also a good deal of redundancy in the system which means the 'resolution' would never actually be that.  Depending on the part of retina, it may take stimulation of many of the photoreceptors to cause firing of the associated nerve, which still doesn't necessarily guarantee that the brain will tell us we have 'seen' something.

I can't recall the source but i remember reading that 1080p is not a accidental number but rather that the ~2 million pixels represented produce an image that can not be significantly improved upon (in terms of resolution) for the size of TV's likely to be found in people's homes.  That is to say we could double the resolution for the 'average' 40-50 inch flatscreen but the improvement registered by the human eye would be minimal.
