Why he did it, who knows. Depression probably. Oblivion his last book of short stories published was dark even by his standards. Not dark through and through, but definately a much darker tone than his others...which were still pretty black. The last story in the book (I think it was the last one, been a while since I read it) is entirely about one scene where a baby gets a pot of boiling water dumped on it and burns to death. While I didn't follow his personal life closely by any means, I got the feeling that he had become very depressed.
