Forums - General - Writer David Foster Wallace commits suicide.

He was one of my favorite contemporary american authors and essayists and one of my favorite all times authors, this is incredibly tragic. His wife found him at home, he had hung himself. He taught english at Pemona College, and from what I heard was a great teacher. He was awarded the Macarther genius grant in 1997, and his most famous book "Infinite Jest" was one of Time's 100 best english language novels from 1923 to 2005. He was also a well versed mathematician. If you haven't read any of his works, go pick up Infinite Jest, or one of his short story compilations (Brief interviews with Hideous men is my favorite) or one of his essay compilations (consider the lobster being my favorite). This is a great tragedy for the literary world, and for contemporary thinkers everywhere.

So why did he do it? o_o

Pretty sad, considering he helped a lot of people in his life (from what I got reading the article). R.I.P., I guess.

Random game thought :
Why is Bionic Commando Rearmed 2 getting so much hate? We finally get a real game and they're not even satisfied... I'm starting to hate the gaming community so f****** much...

Watch my insane gameplay videos on my YouTube page!

Why he did it, who knows. Depression probably. Oblivion his last book of short stories published was dark even by his standards. Not dark through and through, but definately a much darker tone than his others...which were still pretty black. The last story in the book (I think it was the last one, been a while since I read it) is entirely about one scene where a baby gets a pot of boiling water dumped on it and burns to death. While I didn't follow his personal life closely by any means, I got the feeling that he had become very depressed.

I will have to check him out. I am trying to read more modern authors as I tend not to read anything written before 1950. Hunter S. Thompson has been one of my favorite modern authors so far.

I loved Brett Easton Ellis' American Psycho too.

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. Thompson

I will bump for the evening crowd in case there are any of his fans that visit this site.

I want to be wraiter but seriously why do a lot of them commit suicide? Its kind of daunting i don't wanna become crazy.

Smart people tend to have higher levels of depression and suicide. Its the price you pay for intelligence, you are too aware of the world's imperfections as well as your own.

Also a qualification of being a writer is being able to spell it. So I think you are in the clear.
