| Luthor said: Only third parties with some ambitions succeeded on Wii. Madden wii is a lame sequel, the sales are deserved. Making this assumption with madden wii is irrelevant. |
Quality doesn't tend to be a huge factor in the performance of Wii games Carnival Games anyone ? the demographic is largley different from that of the traditional consoles they don't neccaserily go the the internet to look at the review scores before purchasing the game , they probably just look at the game with the most enticing box art.
I think there is a genuine problem with 3rd party success on the Wii with Nintendo's stronghold it's difficult for a 3rd party to reach the top 10 unless they have a game that really apeals to the demographic.
Really good games quality games like No more Heroes (0.34M) ,Bloom Blox (0.46M) and Okami (0.12) haven't sold as well as games that realy apeal to the demographic like Carnival Games (2.04M) ,Mario & Sony at the Oylmpics (5.44) and Wii play(14.65M !!!). They key to selling well on the Wii is not really making intensley quality games like MGS4 or Mass Effect but simply making games which are fun and enjoyable to play , it's obvious looking at historical data that the demographic doesn't really care about review scores and quality development but are more interested than popping the disc in their Wii's and playing.
If developers had gone Nintnendo's routue from the start they wouldn't be in this position now but Nintendo didn't inform them neither did they understand what direction the Wii was going in so a lack of communication pretty much meant they were releasing games on a platform without any real direction as to how they should do it .
Here's are some 3rd party launch titles
Red Steel 1.06 M
Publisher: Ubisoft
Developer: Ubisoft Paris
Players: 1
Play Style: Nunchuck
Genre: First-Person Shooter
Description: Over the last few months, Red Steel has been a heavy favorite for Wii fans. Combining classic FPS action with all new hand-to-hand fighting -- with a sword, even -- Red Steel promises to deliver a new look into the FPS genre. All eyes were on Ubisoft this E3, as gamers are dying to see how third party developers are handling the Wii hardware. We'll be watching this one very closely in the next few months leading up to launch.
Dragon Quest Swords: The Masked Queen and the Tower of Mirrors 0.7M
Publisher: Square Enix
Developer: Square Enix
Players: Unknown
Play Style: Remote (tentative)
Genre: Action
Description: As of right now, very little is known about Dragon Quest Swords: The Masked Queen and the Tower of Mirrors. We do know, however, that this is only one of Square's Wii-exclusive titles, as it will be delivering both Dragon Quest and a sequel to Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles. From what we can tell, Dragon Quest seems to be an action game with possible role-playing elements that allows players to engage in spell-casting and melee combat using the Wii-mote as their weapon. The title seems to be a sequel to and not a port of a Japan-only plug-and-play sword-fighting game based in the DQ universe. More on this mysterious launch title as it develops.
Madden NFL 2007 0.45 M
Publisher: Electronic Arts
Developer: EA Canada
Players: 2
Play Style: Nunchuck
Genre: Sports
Description: When we first got word that Madden would be making a Wii appearance at launch, we were a bit skeptical. Mixing a simulation sports game with innovative control seems like a tricky proposition, and we were curious if the controls would help or hurt the polished design of EA's flagship title. Our view changed, however, when we took hold of the controller at E3 and threw a pin-point touchdown pass on only our second play. Playing is certainly believing, and Madden delivers gameplay that will have even the most anti-simulation gamers dying to pick this up at launch.
Starting to notice a trend? , these titles would likely have performed even worst than they did had they not been launch titles . There's no point of developers releasing big budget high end games for the Wii because it's been established that , that isn't what they are after , they are simply after an enjoyable time. Nintendo Succesfully captured their demographic ( duh ) with a plethora of directly targeting first party titles. To be honest I can't really explain why Metroid and Zelda did so well , it's could have been because of the promotion and marketing they received , possibly the brand name they have carried for decades or likely a combination of various factors.
We get to the point where the consumer doesn't trust anything non-nintendo because they've failed to apeal to them from the start they know when they pick up a console developd by Nintendo that they'll avoid all the fuss of choosing which game to pick of the shelf "Wii Play gave me what I wanted Wii sports did so too ,the next Wii XXX or Nintendo made game will probably do the job" , Developers would have to completley overhaul the way they operate in order to be succesful on the Nintnedo platform but with the existance of the PS3 and XBOX 360 that would mean ignoring a proven profitable user base of 35 Million traditional userbase in exchange from a more riskier unproven userbase (but faster growing userbase) of 32.01Million , the traditional developer has always developed for the traditional console so apealing the the Wii demographic may be a bigger task than many people think.
Side Note: all the Wii fans stop bitching and trying to damage an anaylysts credibility when he/she sais something that hurts your precious little Wii , you just sound irrational.
