PSP was dead in Japan?
Not sure about this,
but after MH2G and PSP slim is started sell GREAT.
Same will be with PS3, it`s just have very few Japanese oriented games for now, But that will change eventually.
PS3 is only 1.8 year on the market, it`s less then 2 years. And it will be here for atleast next 6 years so far. =)

It`s a matter of time. Yakuza3, FFXIII, FFXIIIv, Tekken6, SFIV, Team Ico, WKC, Naruto are on their way. =)
