@Tbone - if you liked Shenmue you will love this. If you like VF you will love this. If you love a world like no other, you will like it. If you like a really engaging storyline with characters that are awesome you will like this. If you like engaging gameplay, you will like this. I recommend you pick up the ps2 Yakuza and see what it really is all about. Words cannot do this game justice. It is possibly the best game Sega have published in terms of quality on the past 2-3 years.
