Its rumored the PS2 costs Sony approximately 30 dollars to create. The rest of the system goes towards pure profit. This combined with a profit off of PS3, and a profit off of PSP (with the recent surge in sales), I can easily see the company profitting on the 3 billion loss easily.

 

We may have criticized Kutaragi and balked about expense, but it really is like Yoshida said "The Hardware and Software costs are all coming together."

 

I doubt the PS2 costs only 30 dollars to make....I would say around 80 bucks (controller + case + DVD drive + MB + EE+GS + MISCELLANEOUS).
