| SuperDave said: I love how people were actually serious about a "holographic device" or "virtual harddrive" of some sort. He probably said a "better solution" because he meant it would be simple and/or cheap to implement and not require any major peripherals. The most likely scenario is expanded SD card functionality imo. |
That's all I'm really hoping for--direct access and use of the SD card--and the Channels Menu should expand naturally once you begin filling it up.
If anyone had bothered to read up on what Nintendo is doing with the Holographic Storage, they'd (theoretically) realize that Nintendo and InPhase are working on what appears to be a "disk reader" for an HVD--Holographic Versatile Disk. Had they read further, they'd see that these disk drives currently cost $13,000. Which makes it pretty clear that A) holographic storage is extremely highly unlikely for the Wii, and B) they're likely developing the technology to use in the next generation machine. Instead of optical disks (Nintendo's disks aren't actual DVD's) capable of 8 gigabytes of storage, they'll use HVD's capable of 1-4 Terrabytes of storage. It's not a cheap technology yet, but theoretically could be by the time the next generation kicks off.
Here's the other thing, though: If the solution is just "opening up the SD card," what the hell is taking so long? Have a team of 2-5 guys churn out the coding and firmware update in a couple weeks and get it done already!
I just hope it's not some stupid "virtual harddrive." The last thing I want to have to deal with is untimely lag while trying to play Splatterhouse or Sin & Punishment.
