Yeah, it doesn't sound like the Metroid games for you. Linearity is not something they do. They're closer to adventure games (lmainly exploring with lots of action thrown in) than a straight-up shooter.
You can probably find either of the first two cheap for GC, so try picking one of those up first (I heartily recommend the first game).
