As bad as things are for the XBox 360, I expect Microsoft will have reason enough at the end of this generation to release (at least) one more console ...
The XBox 360 is selling at a (slightly) faster rate than the original XBox while being higher priced and having hardware issues (both manufacturing and defects); they will soon be able to reduce the price and its life should be longer than the original XBox which will lead to higher sales numbers. From a publishing perspective by the end of this year they will have sold similar numbers of first party games as they sold on the XBox. XBox Live is catching on and the XBox Live marketplace is proving (somewhat) popular with both gamers and publishers, which provides Microsoft with alternative revinue and establishes a service in their desired livingroom location.
Basically, the XBox 360 will end up being a huge improvement in sales and profitability to the original XBox ... You don't normally drop a product when it is seeing large improvements in sales.
