Actually I think that the race has finally been made incredibly interesting.
You do raise some important points. Nintendo will most assuredly be in the best position to start the gen after this one, as they'll be able to make refinements to their Motion/IR and increase the system's power relatively easy. And there's no way in hell any future consoles won't involve simillar interactive tech.
But I'm not so sure about some of your claims on this gen.Â
The multiple sku's of the box and station do present some problems, but they all play the same games, so I don't see the "PC system requirements problem" being any issue at all. The PS and PS2 went through redesigns, but nobody complains about the slimline.
You state that graphics on those two systems are limited more by designers than technology right now. Isn't that a good thing? as designers will get better as they develop more games? Doesn't that mean they have almost no limits creatively? Look at the Bioshock Vids, and tell me the Xbox's games aren't getting better looking.Â
In all, I think what makes this the most interesting console race ever is the fragmentation of what's being offered. With the Wii going in a different direction, it both assures it's status of a major seller like the PS and PS2, and allows the 360 and P23 to do a hell of a lot better than the Cube and xbox.
I'm a mod, come to me if there's mod'n to do.
