For digital cameras for your average person.... the pixels are not as important as the lens and the features like vibration control.
4 Megapixels is as high as you need unless you are:
1. Printing the picture bigger than A4 size
2. Really need to zoom in a lot on your photos and print them normal size.
If you are a proffessional then the lens and optical zoom are still more important than the pixels.... but higher pixels might be needed becaue you are more likely to be printing bigger pictures or cropping out tiny bits.
