DVD overtook VHS cause it was a prime time to do so, VHS had been out for a long time, VHS was harder to manufacture at MUCH lower qualities then DVD and VHS couldn't hold anywhere near as much as DVD, Blu-ray came when DVD is at it's prime, not dying like VHS was, and now we may go to a streaming format instead of disc so the fight may be lost before blu-ray could really take over.
