A redesign with a different screen size could still work, as games could be resized and all, but new functionality is something that would cause huge problems as it would create a software divide.

This is true. I seriously don't expect that to happen, i was just stating that it would be physically possible. It wouldn't be the best decision by Nintendo by any stretch of the imigination. Save it for DS2 I suppose.
