The Source engine has been constantly worked on since HL2 came out...that was only 4 years ago. Since then the Ep1 engine changed a few things, and the Ep2 engine changed a lot of things.
Left 4 Dead brings a few new things to the engine...it's not the same engine from 4 years ago, and running on a high-end PC it'll definitely look better than the 360 version.
If a PC has better hardware at all than the 360 hardware, of course it's going to run better...that's common sense.

Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release. (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )
