It seems pure luck that he wasn't killed. Yoda prevented Dooku from killing him. Obi Wan assumed he HAD killed him (the Emperor saved him). Marek chose not to kill him despite the Emperor commanding him to. Same thing with Luke. The Emperor told Luke to kill him, but he refused.
