Equally desperate.
Edit: The original PS3 sku's were a mistake. Sony misjudged the willingness of gamers to pay $500 - $600. The original PS3 should have been the current 40 gig model at $400. Sony realized it had a problem and value engineered out some cost to create the 40 gig.
