Yeah, politically motivated murders aren't exactly uncommon in Russia. Litvinenko and Politkovskaya are just the latest - and the most known - in a long line of dead dissidents. Having a huge mouth and mind of your own isn't exactly a benefit in Putin's Russia.
Garry Kasparov (a major opposition advocate) is probably still alive just because of his international visibility thanks to his prior chess career.
