MMOs, subscription services, and direct to drive download services are the definite future for PC gaming in terms of growth and profitability. There is plenty of head room in these categories to ensure that PC gaming will continue to last and grow in the future.
Retail outlet PC gaming on the other hand, is gradually becoming less significant, and is already being eclipsed by retail sales for console games.
If the question is whether PC games will ever stop being developed, the answer would be no. Never.
Unless there is some future form of interactive computer entertainment that replaces it in the very distant future, or computers as we know them cease to exist, programmers will always write code for the purpose of entertainment, even if there ever comes a time in which it is no longer commercially viable for businesses to profit on developing and selling games.
