Any character you want cut: Marth, Ike, duplicate Links, drop half the Pokemon characters, drop DeDeDe, drop Ness or Lucas, drop Falco & Wolf, drop Ice Climbers, replace Zelda/Shiek with Zelda/Tetra or something like that, and how about having no more doppleganger characters?
Also, for the next incarnation, each character's moveset should be drastically overhauled so that it's not so easy to just pick up and stick with your favorite from "last time," and to differentiate from the previous title a little more.
