Your logic about being only for internet hardcore gamers is very poor. Have you heard of Leisure Suit Larry? Many games have had sexual jokes or scenes before. People arent afraid of it, more so adults. This could have been a big hit if marketed properly.

The mainstream audience wouldn't know anything about Birdo, and would never get the joke.  They wouldn't know little Mac, they wouldn't know the advance wars guys.

The entire humor and game would be lost on them.  This is like... an episode of family guy.

If you show an episode of Family Guy to an alien, they aren't going to laugh because it's all about context and stuff that's popular in culture.  This game has almost no appeal or use to anyone who hasn't been playing games since the NES.... or are at least well read on videogame culture.... dealing with the NES.

Otherwise your just the new guy, who doesn't get all the jokes the established group is telling, so you just laugh along pretending you know what the jokes are about but the truth is your just confused.

 

 Nonsense! Clearly this was going to be Nintendo's next big franchise that everyone will buy. They would never make a game intended for a handful of hardcore fans to enjoy.
