I would say that the 4 lights are to show which player you are, 1 through 4, just like the 360 controllers.

those 4 lights on the wiimote are to show you what player you are too actually.  to see battery life hit the menu button and the battery life will be shown in on screen.

The best way to see the battery life is to play Metroid Prime 3: Corruption.
