If they had sold a decent amount they to consumers they wouldn't keep using vague wording that could be interpreted many ways and instead just come out with how many people actually own their console.

Sony has sold precisely 0 units to consumers. Like every OEM, they only sell to (re-)distributors. The numbers Sony states in their financial reports are absolutely clear. The problem is journalists (and, apparently, teenagers) who do not understand the expressions used in common business language.

These are the only numbers we know for sure from the various financial reports:

Until march 31st (year end report): units produced: 5.5M, units sold to (re-)distributors: 3.57M

Until june 30th (1st quarter report): additional units produced: not given, additional units sold to (re-)distributors 0.71M

These are the numbers we can roughly guess from 1st quarter financial report:

1st quarter ending june 30th: units produced: approx 0.5-1M

Units bought by consumers: approx. 4M or whatever number you like, but vgc numbers are probably close.
