Yes Sony got into the gaming world using their money, but I question if anyone could have gotten into the world dominated by Nintendo and Sega without throwing around some cash. But, that's neither here nor there. The meat of the discussion is that Sony's first parties have made some great games. SotC was by far my favorite game of the last generation. Do they have characters as iconic as Nintendo or Sega? No, but Nintendo has kept and fosterred those icons, Sony tried that and it just didn't work. Having gaming icons doesn't make you a talented company, it means that you have characters that worked well and you decided to use them in a large number of games.
Nintendo has made fantastic games, and I have no problems with them being denoted as the best first party company around, but don't just throw out some PS3 titles and call Sony's first party offerings crap because they aren't iconic.
