While in grad school you will probably be given teaching jobs in the university to cover for living and tuition expenses, you can even sometimes raise a whole family on that salary. In grad school you need about 2 years for your Masters and then 4ish years for your PhD and a complete thesis. That's your PhD in a nutshell.
