If you're going to compare avatars you should be talking about the fact that Microsoft would be the last to implement avatars after the Wii came up with the concept, Sony came up with Home to try and dismantle both Live and the Wii's online community at the same time (Which will fail), and Microsoft followed suit since this seems to be the avatar era.
Anyway, they liked the Wiis concept more than they liked Sonys and found it to be better to implement the characters into fun exclusive games such as 1 vs 100, Scene it: Box office smash, Monopoly, Uno and more. I doubt you can use your home character for anything but Home world physics games, which will be no better than GTA IV's Bowlihng and Pool, so cherish the PSN games.
As for influence you need to understand that Sony never would've understood how online truely must work to survive after its lost battle with Live last gen. I didn't even play Xbox as much as PS2 last gen and knew that Live was far superior. This gen theres far more games and a much larger community. Microsoft is raking in money on Xbox live. I cannot blame Microsoft for expecting payment when Live is an awesome experience which is worth every cent. PSN can be free all it wants, i've used it. It should be free. When I get my PS3 that will be one less thing that I have to worry about paying for.
Microsoft is trying to figure out how to meld the Live community with the PC community as we speak. If this works, then they will be able to boast the largest gaming community for gaming in the world melding PC and console into a similar gaming experience.
