The Playstation 2 launched in Japan way before America or PAL, although I'm not sure of the exact dates. When you align the launches of all regions combined for both the Wii and the PS2, you'll see that while the Wii is ahead, it's not winning by as large a margin as you described. And the difference between the PS2 and PS3 is much larger. I'm sure the Wii will sell more than the PS2, but the DS is the winner of this generation anyways.
