During the classic era, there was compatibility thorugh add-ons.
Atari addressed the issue by making an add on for the 5200 that played 2600 games.
Interestingly, two Atari competitors did the same thing. Both the Colecovision and the Intellivision had add-ons to play Atari 2600 games. (This would be like the Xbox 360 playing PS2 games).
Coleco even went so far as to release an Atari 2600 clone (the Gemini).
