Source? I think that the lack of any developer internally Nintendo specialized in JRPG was the primary motive.
Iwata when spoke to investors said that the acquisition was favorable thanks to a share vision between Nintendo and Monolith.
However I think that the merge between Bandai and Namco ( Nintendo had 3-4% of shares in Bandai while Namco had over 80% in Monolith ) was favorable to the acquisition.
